Practical Approaches to Emotional, Physical and Mental Regulation
This course provides a simple, practical introduction to understanding and supporting people with ADHD. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person focuses, manages impulses, regulates emotions, and organises tasks. It is not a lack of ability or motivation, but a difference in how the brain processes information and manages everyday demands. Many of the challenges associated with ADHD are linked to executive functioning, the brain’s management system, which helps with planning, starting tasks, staying on track, and completing activities.
Throughout this course, you will learn how to support a person with ADHD in a way that is practical, respectful, and person-centred. This includes understanding how to adapt tasks to match a participant’s strengths, rather than focusing only on their challenges. By breaking tasks into smaller steps, using routines, and providing clear structure, support workers can reduce overwhelm and help participants build confidence and independence. This course will also explore strategies to improve executive functioning, such as using visual supports, prompts, and time-management tools, as well as creating supportive environments that minimise distractions.
In addition, this course will guide you in communicating effectively with people with ADHD. You will learn how to use clear, simple, and encouraging language, provide one instruction at a time, and avoid communication styles that may feel overwhelming or critical. By the end of this course, you will have a strong foundation in understanding ADHD and practical tools to support participants in a way that is empowering, supportive, and focused on their individual strengths and goals.
